Exporting refs from Ovid to Endnote web

March 19, 2012

You can now export references directly from the Ovid databases such as Medline into Endnote web.

You need to have installed the Endnote web add on for your toolbar.

Below are some instructions on how to do it.

Endnote Web Live Web Sessions

October 27, 2011

I’ll be demonstrating Endnote Web on the following dates and times:

Tuesday 8th November 1-2pm
Thursday 17th November 1-2pm
Wednesday 23rd November 12-1pm

These will be the first of many sessions so don’t worry if you can’t make these. There will be more.

If you are interested in participating in one of the demonstrations please drop an email  to the distance learning service: dls@cf.ac.uk

To participate in the session you will need the latest version of flash. Headphones are useful but not necessary as long as you have sound on your computer.  There will be a demonstration of using the software (by me sharing my screen with you) with questions taken from yourself as we go along.

You receive confirmation of your place. On the morning of the session you will recieve a link to access the session.

Endnote Web – fix part 2!

July 11, 2011
We are still having problems with people accessing the full list of styles in Endnote web.  If you are having problems with this there are 2 things you need to do. Follow these instructions

First : Login to Web of Knowledge using the link below. (please logout of Cardiff Portal first before you do this).
Second
: get the new plug in.
  • To restore access to styles, filters and online connections, log into Web of Knowledge and select “My EndNote Web” on the top menu to access your account. This resets your roaming access for one year (see the roaming access help topic for more details).

Check that your roaming access on the new Account Information page on the Options tab has been reset for one year.

  • Next ensure that you have installed the latest plug-in for EndNote Web (3.1). You should also make sure that you are uninstalling the older versions of the plug-in and install only the latest version. Please follow the steps listed in this help link to uninstall and reinstall the plugin.

The reason for the fault reported earlier is that roaming access to the styles has expired. The good news is that you can refresh your roaming access by logging into Web of Knowledge.

Endnote web problem reported

June 20, 2011

Hi- I have had a couple of you report to me that there are problems with cite while you write in Endnote web- in that the styles list is only displaying ‘Author – Date’  rather than the full range.

I have found out what the problem is- but am looking into how to remedy it.

More to follow.

Web 2.0 tools to manage your references?

February 18, 2011

Good reasons why you should use Social Bookmarking / Citation Tools.

  • Cut down on your use of postit notes! 😉
  • Cluster or organise your refs into bundles.
  • Keep track of websites you want to revisit as well as articles, wikis etc
  • Manage your personal reading lists
  • Promote your own published research!
  • Collaborating and interact and SHARE with others
  • Serendipitious Learning!

Take yourself back to 2001

Student Sally comes into the library with her mates at lunchtime to browse and photocopy some articles. One of her friends pick out some articles they found from a search they did earlier and she picks out the references which were given to her in the lecture they just had. The other one picks her nose. (only kidding- run with me – we’re nearly there)
Sally notices that her friend has a couple of articles which would be relevant for a case study which she is working on in her placement.  She asks her friend for them and she also notices that one of the articles is in a themed issue, so there are a number of articles of relevance to the case. Whoopee. Saved loads of time, now they are all off home for tea and scones.

How does this happen in 2011? Not the cream tea! The serendipitous learning! If you are on a distance learning course; on placement or just don’t see that many people in the flesh these days….Social Bookmarking / Citing is FOR YOU!

One of the more academic Social Bookmarking tools
