Social Bookmarking / Citation Tools

February 15, 2011

Social Bookmarking isn’t new, but there are so many products on the market I do get asked what advantages do they offer over professional referencing software such as Endnote.

So here is what I have gathered from personal use and other people’s opinions.  I think it would be great if you have anything to add or share with us please add your comments.

Easy referencing

February 2, 2011

The easy way to reference in your assignments without the use of post it notes and papers littered all over your desk is to use Endnote.

To use EndNote Web off campus you will need to sign up to  Web of Knowledge for a personal account (also known as web of science) you can then use the same username and password for EndNote Web becuase it recognises Web of Knowledge personal accounts.

EndNote is a database for storing and retrieving references. You can use EndNote to save references, insert citations into word processed documents and automatically compile reference lists in any chosen format.

I think EndNote web offers a perfectly acceptable version of Endnote to use, but without the fee – currently £83 from Cardiff University! Or £55 from adept scientific for an immediate download.

We’ve been doing some on line demo’s on Endnote Web, so if you are still not convinced, come along to a demo and see live what it does and how easy it is to use.

The next dates for Endnote web demos are

Monday 7th  Feb 1-2pm GMT

Thursday 10th Feb 9-10am GMT

To sign up email dls@cf.ac.uk

For more information See EndNote Web Guide

For an Endnote Tutorial go to: http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/insrv/educationandtraining/guides/endnote/index.html

See you there!

Endnote Client

Endnote X4 is available for purchase but Cardiff University have decided not to sell it directly, instead we recommend that you purchase it directly at Adept Scientific.

From the Adept Scientific website register with your Cardiff University details for the special offers. There are various options available, the cheapest being immediate download.

As is previously the case, Endnote Web is free to use for Cardiff University staff and students and you can register for this version via Web of Knowledge.

Corporate Authors in Endnote Web

September 10, 2010

To get a corporate author e.g. an organisation or university to appear correctly in your ciatation and reference list you need to add a comma after the name.

So if Cardiff University was the authour, in the author field you would write:

Cardiff Univeristy,

If the Wound Healing Society was the author, in the author field you would write:

Wound Healing Society,

Pubmed to Endnote Web

September 10, 2010

To import articles from Pubmed to Endnote Web you must first save the articles to your computer in the MEDLINE format, then use the Pubmed (NLM) import filter to get them into Endnote Web.

This is all explained very nicely in this Slideshare presentation from Iowa State University:
